Concert: Mike Eldred Trio opening for Jimmie Vaughan at Moe’s Alley, Santa Cruz, CA

Got the chance to grab tickets for Jimmie Vaughan playing at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, CA on September 11th 2010. The Mike Eldred Trio was opening for the band and electrified the audience, both bands were fantastic. Make sure to check Mike Eldred Trio’s latest CD “61 49″ on their website.

Jonny Lang live at the Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, CA

The Montalvo Arts Center, along with the Mountain Winery, offers one of the most intimate venues for top quality live music, performers such as Buddy Guy, BB King, Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, and Jonny Lang regularly grace their stages.

Jonny Lang is an exceptional musician who can sing better than anyone else, and make his guitar sing, cry, and beg for mercy.

On this tour, Jonny came back to a pre-”Turn Around” CD era setlist with energetic blues and rock songs. His band is composed of Akil Thompson on guitar, Jim Anton at the bass, Dwan Hill on keyboard, Barry Alexander at the drums, and Jason Eskridge on vocals.

Mountain Winery: Live concert with Susan Tedeschi and Jackie Greene

The Mountain Winery is located in the hills of the Bay Area, southwest of Saratoga. I favor this outdoor venue for its relatively small size and the quality of the artists gracing the stage. Contrary to stadium-size venues, you can always get close to the stage provided you book your tickets right after they go on sale, I got a front row center seat and being so close to the stage I could not pass on the opportunity to take pictures.

Attending concerts in California is always an interesting experience  as you are bound to have a patron nearby, usually in his/her forties, smoking pot, and hiding it like a teenager. It sure is entertaining and makes 2nd hand smoking a lot more enjoyable than cigarettes…

The concert started at 7:30pm with Jackie Greene (http://www.jackiegreene.com/) opening for  Susan Tedeschi (http://www.susantedeschi.com/).

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood at Oakland’s Oracle Arena

I was lucky enough to get a pair of tickets for Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood’s concert at the Oracle Arena on June 29th 2009.

After waiting only 40 minutes to enter the parking lot and pay a modest fee of just $25 (congrats to management for such a well organized rip-off) we only missed couple minutes of the concert.

Luckily EC and SW were both fantastic, they sure seem to get better with age and I am always amazed to see E.C deliver such soulful and inspiring solos. EC mostly used his signature Strat in Ferrari Grigio finish and Martin 000-28EC for the acoustic set, the Daphne blue Strat stayed on the rack.

The only regret would be the absence of Little Wing, however the punchy version of Forever Man as well as Voodoo Chile easily made up for it. The show lasted more than 2 hours and the set list included:

Alan Iglesias and Crossfire, a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan

My first visit to Biscuit and Blues in San Francisco was quite a surprise, that night Alan Iglesias and Crossfire was on stage, this is a Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute Band and I must say the show was worth every penny.
Close your eyes and just believe your are back in the Double Trouble era, the band is that good.
The guitars, amps, outfit, and guitar strap are spot on and contribute to the Double Trouble atmosphere. Alan plays a variety of Fender Stratocasters which replicate Stevie Ray Vaughan’s most famous guitars including Number One, Charly, Scotch and Lenny.

Not only was the show musically outstanding, the stage lighting at Biscuit and Blues was strong and balanced enough for photography, which is extremely rare for small venues. Luckily I had my D90 mounted with a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens which is ideal for low ambient light.
