Guitar Porn: Fender Custom Shop Eric Clapton “EC Gray” Limited Edition

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

In case you are wondering, I no longer have any of the guitars shown on this blog. However I’m happy to share these pictures as it can be tricky to find high resolution pictures of some of these instruments.

This one was a Fender Custom Shop Eric Clapton Stratocaster “EC Gray” Limited Edition, 500 pieces of which were built in 2010. The color matches Eric Clapton’s Grigio Silverstone Ferrari, and the guitar comes with a “limited edition” neck plate, logo, and Custom Shop case.

It really is ‘just’ like any of the other Custom Shop Eric Clapton Strats, if you can find one in this color you may as well get it given the limited nature of this finish. Just don’t buy it as an investment as it will most likely never be worth it, let’s face it there are a zillion Custom Eric Clapton Stratocasters around…

Guitar Porn: Fender Custom Shop Heavy Relic 56 Stratocaster

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

For your viewing pleasure here is an example of a Fender Custom Shop 56 Heavy Relic Stratocaster, this one as 6105 frets and 9.5″ radius for improved playability over vintage necks. The necks thickness is close to 1″ at the 12th fret, yet it is surprisingly comfortable and the resonance from the added mass is to die for.

Guitar Porn: Fender John Mayer BLACK1 Special Edition Stratocaster

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Fender just did a limited run of 500 pieces of the John Mayer Stratocaster with specs similar to reliced Strat John Mayer plays on stage.

Among the goodies are a black finish for the body, all gold hardware, white pearl Schaller tuners, and a newly designed InCase gig bag. A Custom Shop Relic version is in the works, however that one is in a whole different price range.

This Strat is essentially a 60s-style Stratocaster with special tuners, 6105 frets, and flatter 9.5″ radius for improved playability.

Guitar Porn: Fender USA Stevie Ray Vaughan Stratocaster

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

The Fender Artist Signature Stevie Ray Vaughan Stratocaster was one of the first few models featuring tall 6105 frets and a flatter 12″ fingerboard radius which greatly improve playability for string bending and soloing. Now you can find similar features other models like the Deluxe Players Strat or John Mayer Strat.

Other special features are the left handed gold tremolo, and Texas Special pickups. The Texas Special pickups are overwound even though SRV used standard pickups are got his hot tone from amps and tube screamer pedals rather than relying on overwound pickups.

Fender Buddy Guy Polka Dot Stratocaster

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

The Fender Buddy Guy Stratocaster is made in Mexico and is pretty much a Fender Stratocaster Standard sporting a V neck and fancy (ugly?) polka dot finish. The ceramic pickups, and bridge are the same parts found on the Standard model.

Unless you need the Polka Dot finish the Fender Jimmy Vaughan Strat, which costs the same, is a much better choice as it also features a V neck but comes with higher quality Tex-Mex pickups and a higher quality American Vintage bridge as found on many USA Strats such as the American Vintage 57/62 or Eric Clapton Stratocasters.

Guitar porn: Fender Eric Clapton Custom Shop Gold Leaf Strat

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

In 1996, Fender’s 50th anniversary, Eric Clapton asked the Fender Custom Shop to build a one of a kind guitar.  John Page, then vice president of the Fender Custom Shop, recalls that “Eric was in the search of something special, a piece that could hang in a museum like the Louvre”.  John thought about gilding a Stratocaster using 23K gold leaves, it took three trials prior to finding the right combination of finish/hardware.

EC’s guitar was built by Masterbuilder Mark Kendrick with gold pickguard, control knobs and pickup covers. Eric replaced the pickguard, pickups, and control knobs with the usual white plastic components found on his Signature Stratocaster. The guitar was extensively used in 1997, and sold for $455,000 on June 24th 2004 during the Christies charity auction for the Crossroads Center which he founded in 1998.

In 2004 Guitar Center introduced a limited Masterbuilt edition of the Gold Leaf Strat which retailed for $8000 with a one year embargo preventing orders for similarly gilded Strats, many collectors bought these as investments. Ironically, a year later anyone could order a Masterbuilt Eric Clapton Stratocaster with a 23k gold leaf body for $4500, the so-called limited edition investment just lost 50% in a day, for life.

Even then, $4,500 is not exactly cheap, luckily with a bit of patience you can gild your own guitar body and replace the stock body from a Fender Eric Clapton Strat (production or Teambuilt Custom Shop model).

I based mine on a brand new Fender Custom Shop Teambuilt Eric Clapton Stratocaster in Mercedes blue finish:

The body was replaced by a USACG one-piece alder body finished with 23k gold leaves clear-coated with polyurethane. I also replaced the Vintage Noiseless pickups with a set of Hot Gold Lace Sensors, and upgraded to gold hardware from Fender (except for the bridge from Gotoh):
